Mobile learning is the combination of e-learning and mobile technology. It refers to the use of mobile communication devices such as mobile phones, personal digital assistant (PDA) or palmtop computer, Laptops or Tablet PC for effective learning. With the evolution of the 3rd Generation (3G) technology, m-learning is really enabling the learners to access data and information at anytime and from anywhere they want.

M-learning has changed the mode of learning from the traditional instructor-led classroom teaching to constructive learner centered educational setting. You can have your biology classes in the fields, chemistry in the laboratory or real world situation, history in the museums and so forth.

As mobile devices are excellent communication tools, the learners can choose to integrate the mobile devices and collectively solve the problems in a manner that supports cooperative problem solving. Though mobile devices such as PDA are comparatively expensive and can’t be afforded by all the students, most of them are going for the mobile phones that are easily available in the markets at affordable prices.

Recent studies in Europe and US have shown that many educational institutions and government organizations are using the portable mobile devices to conduct research projects as these user-friendly devices are helping them achieve better results in reduced time period. Also, the mobile based learning modules have interesting features such as vocabulary memorization, self assessments, repeating exercises and much more.

Through mobile technology, learners/trainees can enjoy learning and research on a subject in an interesting way rather than attending the tedious non-interactive sessions. I think the rapidly emerging field of mobile learning certainly has a promising future.

Do you also think m-learning is a better platform for effective learning or does it have any pitfalls?

Look forward to hear from you.

Hi Asma,

You refer to recent European and US studies. Are you able to identify any of them specifically? Mobile learning is an area that I am starting to explore. Thanks!
